SUMMARY

Mr. D is a young man from Cambridge University was studying at Exmouth town. At that place, there is a ferry to carry passengers. One night Mr. D was awoken by a commanding voice told him to go down to the ferry and the boatman waited. He was sure that no boat would be at that late hour. He tried not to obey, but found sleep was impossible. He got up and went to the ferry. He took the ferry to “Exeter”. There he wandered aimlessly about the streets and decided to return home by the next train.

When he came to a hotel to have breakfast, the waiter told him that many people came to Exeter to attend cases in the law court. He decided to go to the court and listen to the cases being tried there. The prisoner who was being tried was accused of murder. Mr. D could prove that the prisoner was in another place at the time of the crime. The man had been mending a window at Mr. G’s house at M and he lent him his pencil to write something in his notebook. Mr. D read what he had written in his notebook including the date. The prisoner was set free.
